Trip to the Turner
On Wednesday 8 October we took a group of gifted and talented artists across key stage 2 to visit the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate.
We were very lucky to have a beautiful sunny day, so we sat outside overlooking the sea with our morning snacks and enjoyed sketching the view!
2025 is a big year both for JMW Turner and for the railway: it celebrates 250 years since the birth of Tuner and 200 years since the creation of the modern railway. In recognition of this, we walked to the station to look at the shapes and sounds of the architecture there and reflected on a painting by JMW Turner entitled ‘Rail, Steam and Speed’.
We then walked along the promenade to the Turner Gallery and spent some time reflecting on another Tuner painting called, ‘Waves breaking on a Lee Shore at Margate’. We thought about the words that the painting evoked, the main colour groups, what time of day the painting might be representing and whether we could recognise any objects, buildings or people.
We also really enjoyed looking around some very interactive exhibition spaces entitled: ‘The Sunken ship’ by Anna Boghiguian which explores global maritime history and today’s environmental and geopolitical crises.
One of the main reasons we wanted to make the trip this term, was for the children to see the Young Creatives exhibition featuring Annabelle’s work. It is amazing to think that it is hung in the same space as other world-famous artists such as JMW Turner and Anna Boghiguian!
As we walked back to the minibus, one child noticed the sky darkening and said, “Mrs Eldred, I hope we don’t end up in a scene like the Turner painting!”
